Coroner: All 7 Missouri shooting victims were adults

TYRONE, Mo. - As police piece together evidence from six different crime scenes, the coroner in the rural Missouri county where a man allegedly shot and killed seven people and then himself told 48 Hours' Crimesider that all the victims were adults in their 40s to 60s.

Texas County Coroner Tom Whittaker also confirmed that all seven victims died from gunshot wounds.

Police in Tyrone, Mo., were first alerted to a problem when a young girl called 911 from a neighbor's house, saying that she had fled her own home after hearing gunshots Thursday night. When police arrives at the girl's home, they found two dead bodies.

Over the next few hours, authorities found five more dead victims and one wounded victim at three additional residences in Tyrone. The wounded victim was taken to a nearby hospital.

The 36-year-old gunman was discovered in a neighboring county, dead of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt. Jeff Kinder said.

At a fifth residence, police investigating the case discovered the body of an elderly woman who appeared to have died of natural causes.

"We're speculating that he came home and found her deceased and then for whatever reason went on a rampage and started killing people," Whittaker told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "This is just so strange. Right now, with the shooter dead, we don't know. Is there something that sparked this? We're still in the information-gathering stage."
