Cigar Box Art
Is any of that junk in your attic worth some money? How do you sort the trash from the treasure? CBS News Saturday Morning continues its series with collectibles expert Tony Hyman.
The recent popularity of cigars has sent the price of old cigar boxes right through the roof. Boxes that used to bring a few dollars are now bringing $100 and those that were $100 are now three to five times that.
There are six million different boxes, so you might think it would be hard to tell which ones are valuable. But collectibles expert Hyman says what is most important is the picture inside the lid. The more exciting the picture, the more valuable the box. Images of famous men and Spanish-style women are the most common, but you never know what you are going to find on a box.
Hyman says you'll get the most money for labels that picture nudes, sports, Indians, cowboys, patriots, and medical themes. Experts don't buy plain wooden boxes or any box that isn't in fine condition.
