ChiSox Edge Backup Indians

The Chicago White Sox weren't complaining that Cleveland manager Mike Hargrove kept his stars out of the starting lineup Sunday.

Magglio Ordonez hit a solo home run to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 4-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians and snap a six-game losing streak.

The AL Central Division champion Indians, who started a lineup minus regulars Manny Ramirez, Roberto Alomar, Omar Vizquel, David Justice and Harold Baines, lost for just the fourth time in their last 13 games.

  • "Anytime for us to win, regardless of who we are playing, is very huge," White Sox manager Jerry Manuel said. "This is the first time in a long time that we have been able to go out and shake hands after a game."

Mike Sirotka (9-13) ended a three-game losing streak with the win, and won his first game in three starts this season against the Indians. Sirotka gave up three runs and eight hits in seven innings.

"You don't feel it's going to be such a high pressure game," Sirotka said of facing a depleted Indians' lineup. "(The substitutes) don't have the track record that Vizquel and Alomar do. Somehow, someway, (Vizquel and Alomar) are going to burn you. The big thing to their offense is Vizquel and Alomar. And then you get to the guys who can hit the home runs."

Sirotka was even more pleased with the defensive effort behind him. The Indians had to baserunners and one out in each of the first two innings but Sirotka got double plays to end both innings.

"Hopefully we can realize how vital making these plays are," Sirotka said of the White Sox, who lead the AL in errors. "It gives everybody a chance to win."

Bob Howry pitched the ninth for his 22nd save in 28 chances. Vizquel hit a pinch-hit double to lead off the ninth before Howry retired pinch-hitters Alomar and Baines. Justice then walked as a pinch-hitter before Richie Sexson struck out.

"That's not too shabby," Hargrove said of his one-day bench players. "I'll take my chances with them."

Jaret Wright (7-8), making his first start since he was sidelined Aug. 9 because of a strained muscle in his back, allowed four runs and 10 hits in five-plus innings.

"I wasn't satisfied at all," Wright said. "The command wasn't where I wanted it to be."

Wright has at least three more starts to build up arm strength and gear up for the postseason.

"I thought he threw the ball well. He had good velocity and some life in his fastball," Hargrove said. "He got tired a little quicker than anticipated. I wanted him to throw strikes and he did."

Trailing 3-2 in the sixth, the White Sox scored two runs to take the lead. Carlos Lee and Chris Singleton singled to start the inning and knock out Wright. Paul Konerko greeted David Riske with an RBI single to tie the game. Craig Wilson added a sacrifice fly to give the White Sox a 4-3 lead.

Alex Ramirez hit a two-run single in the third to put Cleveland up 2-0.

Ordonez hit his 28th home run, and first since Aug. 17, leading off the fourth to make it 2-1. Liu Rodriguez hit an RBI single in the fifth to tie the game at 2.

Sexson put Cleveland up 3-2 in the sixth with his 29th home run.

The Indians loaded the bases with one out in the eighth against Keith Foulke. But he struck out Sandy Alomar and got Travis Fryman to ground out to end the threat.
