Mother lying next to child hit when 50 shots fired into home

STOCKTON, Calif. -- A woman sleeping with her 2-year-old daughter was injured Monday when more than 50 shots were fired into her Stockton, California home, reports CBS Sacramento.

Police say the mother suffered at least one gunshot wound in the shooting just after midnight. She was transported to an area hospital and was listed in stable condition Tuesday. Three other people were in the home at the time, but nobody else was hurt.

Bullets shattered windows on both the house and a nearby car, and left walls in the home littered with holes. Neighbors say the gunfire made them jump out of bed to see what was going on. Witnesses reported to police that two cars sped away from the scene--a tan Acura and a black Honda Civic.

Now they're worried the shooter could come back.

The bedrooms where Arnie Hurtado's sons sleep is a stone's throw away from the house that was targeted.

"I went and touched them to make sure they were fine," Hurtado told CBS Sacramento. "I don't want that for my kids, so. It is scary."

Sacramento police said they don't have a suspect in the shooting, but believe the house was not chosen at random.

"Definitely that house or someone inside that house was a target," police spokesperson Joe Silva said. "And we want to know why."
