Burn an Extra 300 Calories Per Day by Standing Instead of Sitting

As regular Business Hacks readers now know, the deadliest thing you're doing at the office is sitting on your butt all day. The more time you spend in a sitting position, the higher your risk of heart attack, back problems, and weight gain.

On the flipside, switching to a standing position can actually help with weight loss! That's according to the calorie-burn calculator at JustStand.org, which quickly determines how many extra calories you'll burn per day by standing instead of sitting.

Just plug in your weight and the number of hours you routinely spend on your caboose. (This shouldn't be the total length of your workday, mind you, but rather the actual time spent sitting. In other words, subtract breaks and other periods of movement.)

In my case, as you can see in the above screenshot, I stand to burn nearly 300 calories per day by getting off my seat and on my feet. All else being equal, I'll drop nearly a pound every two weeks.

Your mileage will almost certainly vary, and I can't promise that spending the day standing won't cause back problems rather than alleviate them. I find that I can't stand for more than about 20 minutes without my back muscles getting pretty sore.
