Bull attacks, kills Michigan farmer

LOWELL TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Sheriff's deputies in western Michigan have killed an aggressive bull with 33 shots after the animal killed a 71-year-old farmer.

The Kent County sheriff's department says the owner of the bull was trying to corral it before the attack Wednesday in Lowell Township, southeast of Grand Rapids. He died from his injuries.

At about 1 p.m. Wednesday, deputies received a call that a bull was running loose on a farm in the Cascade Road and Morse Lake area, CBS affiliate WWMT reported.

The caller was a neighbor who had gone to check on the farmer only to find the bull running loose and the farmer on the ground.

The caller backed away, saying the bull looked aggressive, and waited for deputies to arrive, according to WWMT.

When they arrived, deputies said they were able to pen the bull into the driveway of the property with their patrol car, and decided to shoot the animal with their cruiser rifles because they were unable to get close to the victim.

The deputies reportedly fired 33 rounds, each striking the bull. They said that the bull was agitated, but eventually dropped to the ground.

Police said the farmer died of his injuries. His name wasn't immediately released.

The sheriff's department said the bull broke through an area of the farm that had an electric fence.
