Build Your Own GPS Cupholder Mount

gps-mount.jpgDo-it-yourself site Instructables shows you how to build a GPS mount that fits in your car's cupholder. Why would you want to? Some states have laws prohibiting windshield mounts, and some drivers don't like having their nav systems up on top of their dashboards.

All you need for this project is a piece of 3-inch PVC pipe, a pair of pipe caps, a flat-head bolt, and a nut and washer (all told, probably a couple bucks' worth of parts at the local hardware store). You also need some tools and about 20 minutes of spare time.

Definitely a neat little project, though I have concerns about the end result: Having a GPS at eye level is distracting enough, but mounting it down low strikes me as even more unsafe. Every second you're looking at the screen is a second you're not looking at the road. So be extra-careful out there, please!
