Browse Embarrassing Facebook Status Updates

These days, it's no secret that Facebook has some serious image problems stemming from its privacy policy. Old college e-mails from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg have recently circulated, suggesting that he doesn't treat privacy issues with much respect. And the site's current Byzantine privacy settings virtually guarantee that you are sharing stuff with the world you might not intend to.

Hot on the heels of all that, I've got a site you use to explore real status messages to prove just how out of control Facebook's privacy settings are.

Openbook is a site that lets you search for any word or phrase and immediately see Facebook statuses that include your term. The site's tagline: "Facebook helps you connect and share with the people in your life. Whether you want to or not."

Search for words which appear anywhere in the status or use quotes to look only for exact matches. It's amazing what you'll find -- people admitting to cheating, lying, playing hooky from work, hating their boss, infidelity... you name it. The only thing I didn't find was anyone confessing to murder, but I suspect I just didn't look hard enough.

We know that employers are using Facebook as a tool to make hiring and firing decisions. Explore Openbook and then be sure to control your Facebook data with ReclaimPrivacy.
