Armstrong, who is also the show's composer and co-author, will return to the role he created as St. Jimmy on April 5 through closing night on April 24.
Armstrong's original 2011 performance schedule included performances only in January and February.
"American Idiot" documents the journey of three life-long friends who are forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of suburbia in a post 9-11 world.
The show has had 421 performances and 27 previews during its yearlong run at the St. James Theatre.
The show was nominated for Best Musical at the 2010 Tony Awards, and won for both Best Scenic Design and Best Lighting Design. It also won a 2011 Grammy for Best Musical Show Album.
