Big Pile-Up Near California's Cajon Pass
Several people were injured in a massive car pile-up at the Cajon Pass in San Bernardino County, California, Monday, KCBS-TV in Los Angeles reports.
Eighty to 120 cars were believed involved in the crash. Visibility was less than 100 feet due to fog and the pavement was wet, meaning motorists had no time to react to collisions in front of them, investigators said. The posted speed limit is 70 mph.
The accident happened at about 8:30 a.m. on the southbound side of Interstate 15 near Highway 138.
"I knew I was in trouble when I didn't see any brake lights," a witness told CBS News. "My car started sliding because there was cars in front of me and I started braking...It was very much in slow motion. I seriously didn't know if I was going to live or die."
"It's a mess," California Highway Patrol Officer Robert Velasco told news wires. "It's just below the summit. At least two tractor-trailers are on their side."
