Big Names Traded before MLB Deadline

There was a flurry of activity in Major League Baseball before the 4 p.m. Eastern deadline to complete deals without waivers.

A few of Friday's transactions:

Red Sox Acquire Victor Martinez

The Boston Red Sox have agreed to acquire All-Star slugger Victor Martinez from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for right-hander Justin Masterson and two minor league pitchers. The trade came shortly before the deadline to complete deals without waivers.

The 30-year-old Martinez has split his time at catcher and first base this season. He's hitting .284 with 15 home runs and 67 RBIs.

It's the second big deal of the week for the rebuilding Indians after trading reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee to Philadelphia for four prospects.

Reds Get Scott Rolen from Toronto

The Cincinnati Reds have reached a deal to get third baseman Scott Rolen from the Toronto Blue Jays.

A person familiar with the swap told The Associated Press the teams got the deal done by Friday's 4 p.m. EDT deadline. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because there had not been an official announcement.

Rolen is a five-time All-Star. At 34, he's injury-prone but was having a good season, batting .320 with eight home runs and 43 RBIs for the Blue Jays.

Rolen was the 1997 NL Rookie of the Year with Philadelphia and helped St. Louis win the 2006 World Series.

Adam LaRoche Back to Atlanta

Adam LaRoche is headed back to Atlanta, and Casey Kotchman is returning to the American League in an exchange of first basemen.

The Braves acquired LaRoche from the Boston Red Sox for Kotchman and cash.

LaRoche played in Atlanta from 2004-06. He was dealt from Pittsburgh to Boston on July 22.

Kotchman was traded almost exactly one year after he was acquired by the Braves from the Los Angeles Angels for Mark Teixiera (teh-SHEHR'-uh).

Kotchman is hitting .282 with six homers and 41 RBIs with the Braves this season.

LaRoche batted .248 with 13 homers and 43 RBIs for Pittsburgh and Boston.

Detroit Trades for Jarrod Washburn

After days of debate, the Seattle Mariners have traded left-handed pitcher Jarrod Washburn to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for left-hander Luke French and a minor-league prospect.

The Mariners announced the deal Friday morning, just hours before the non-waiver trade deadline arrived.

Washburn has turned around his career this season. After three lackluster years in Seattle, the left-hander is 8-6 with a 2.64 ERA this season.

Washburn will be a free agent this offseason, and the Mariners decided to maximize his trade value.

French has split the season between Detroit and Triple-A Toledo. He's 1-2 with a 3.38 ERA in five starts for the Tigers.

Brewers Get Claudio Vargas

The Milwaukee Brewers have reacquired reliever Claudio Vargas from the Dodgers.

Los Angeles gets a minor league catcher in the deal between playoff contenders.

The 31-year-old Vargas was 0-0 with a 1.64 ERA in eight games for the NL West-leading Dodgers. The right-hander was on the disabled list for nearly three months because of elbow tendinitis, and was activated July 3.

Vargas won 11 games for Milwaukee in 2007 and was released before the start of the 2008 season.

Twins Pick Up Orlando Cabrera

Shortstop Orlando Cabrera has been traded from Oakland to Minnesota.

The Twins sent minor league infielder Tyler Ladendorf to the A's for Cabrera and cash.

Cabrera was batting .280 with four homers, 41 RBIs and 11 steals for the Athletics. He's expected to be at the Metrodome for Saturday's game against the Angels.
