At The Movies: Bruce And 'The Kid'
It was just about this time last summer that Bruce Willis hit the big screen with a small costar and came up with a huge blockbuster called The Sixth Sense. This weekend, he opens another big film with a small-fry costar.
Will lightning strike twice? The answer, from Early Show Contributor Laurie Hibberd: Why not?
From action hero to romantic leading man, Willis has had more lives than just about any actor in Hollywood. But he seems to have found a niche as the everyman. In his latest film, Disney's The Kid, that quality just might put him on top one more time.
Willis plays a successful image consultant whose life is turned upside down when he magically meets himself as an 8-year-old child. The adult is reminded what a geeky, pudgy kid he was, and the child (Spencer Breslin) is disgusted with the uptight sell-out that he will become.
The combination of Willis and a child seems to be working now, but it wasn't always like that. Back in 1994, he made North with 10-year-old Elijah Wood, and it was a bomb.
The other big film opening this weekend: Scary Movie. As is often the case with the Wayans brothers, their latest effort is a family affair. The idea for Scary Movie, a parody of summer slasher films, came about when Shawn and Marlon Wayans were watching one of those movies on video. Older brother Keenen Ivory Wayans directed Scary Movie, which was a familiar situation for Shawn.
"He's been kind of like the director throughout my life, so, you know, to be directed this time and get paid for it, hey, why not?" he told The Early Show's Mark McEwen.
