And Hooray For Captain Spaulding

We strive for accuracy here at Couric and Co., and feel compelled to give official voice to the many of you who wrote to tell Andrew Cohen that he got his Woody Allen quote wrong in his last post.

Andrew quoted Woody as saying: "I'd never join a club that would allow a person like me to become a member." Actually, so far as we can tell, that quote is accurate and correct. However, as many of you pointed out, Groucho Marx got on the scoreboard earlier than Allen with this almost-but-not-quite identical quote: "I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member."

Cohen reports that his selection of the Allen quote, as opposed to the Marx quote, in no way diminishes his profound respect for Groucho. As Andrew told us, cigar in hand: "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy."
