NEW YORK (CBS) Familiar faces returned to the dancing stage, as the 11 chosen finalists were paired with 12 all-star dancers from previous seasons on Thursday night's episode of "So You Think You Can Dance."

Former favorites like season three's Pasha Kovalev, season four's Stephen "Twitch" Boss and season six's Kathryn McCormick were a few included in the all-star bunch.

For those of you who don't know, the producers of the show decided to switch things up this season.

Instead of having 20 finalists who pair up with each other for contests, there are only 11 who will be paired with popular dancers from previous seasons. Each week, the finalists will pick a name out of a hat and dance to the style of the all-star chosen.

The new show format was kick-started with an energetic opening number to David Bowie's "Fame." The dance was choreographed by Wade Robson and featured both the top 11 and all-stars.

Other highlights of the night came from the performances by finalists Jose Ruiz, Lauren Froderman and Kent Boyd.  And although none of the performances were officially judged, Thursday night's episode gave a good feel of what is to come.

Next Wednesday, the competition will kick in for real as elimination is back in the equation.
