A Visit To Sapelo Island
Just off the southern coast of Georgia, Sapelo Island is a beautiful place, filled with wild animals, including alligators and even the occasional wild horse.
But it is also home to a way of life: Gullah. Virtually unchanged for hundreds of years, Gullah is African-American-French culture that grew out of the isolation of the islands along Georgia and South Carolina. As Gullah falls victim to tourism and vacation homes, Sapelo Island has become one of its strongholds.
CBS.com, in conjunction with CBS Sunday Morning, visits Sapelo Island, where Gullah is nurtured carefully by the inhabitants.
CBS Sunday Morning airs Sunday, July 19, 9 AM ET/PT. Check local listings.
