A Tool to Triage Your Email in Outlook 2010

It's no secret that we spend too much time wading through email these days. This much is true: Outlook 2010 has made my life a lot easier with its superb Conversation View -- it groups email by "threads" so all the related messages stay together. But if, like me, you believe that you spend too much time managing your inbox each day, check out this free Outlook add-in that gives you new ways to "triage" your mail.

MailTriage is an aptly named Outlook 2010 add-in that displays a new view at the bottom of the Outlook window. MailTriage's Conversation view lists all of the emails in your inbox, with columns that show you sender, subject, received date, size, and how many messages are in the conversation. Click a conversation, and you'll also see a summary of the threads in a small viewer pane on the right.

This small addition to Outlook is quite empowering. You can now sort messages by criteria like date, size, or subject without affecting your preferred sorting in Outlook's main display. You can also see how long various conversations are (ie, how many emails are in the thread) and deal with the mail in any order you like. You can even set up special rules. It's easy, for instance, to group messages with certain keywords into new ad-hoc conversations.

MailTriage is free for personal and business use and makes a powerful accessory to any Outlook 2010 deployment.
