8 Cuban migrants make it to Florida after 11 days at sea
MIAMI -- Eight Cuban migrants came ashore Tuesday morning on Bal Harbour beach, north of Miami Beach, reports CBS Miami.
They landed their 25 foot homemade vessel around 3:30 a.m. Two people who were on the beach spotted them and called 911.
The men, who are all friends, say they left Holguin province in Cuba on April 30.
"They said they encountered a sizeable storm which drifted them onto an island which they believe was in the Bahamas. After the storm, they set sail again, coming ashore this morning," said Bal Harbour Police Capt. Miguel De La Rosa.
De La Rosa said all are in good condition.
"These men are very fortunate. When you consider that these eight individuals, ranging in age from their late 30s to early 40s, were at sea in this homemade vessel and encountered storm. They are very, very fortunate to be alive," said De La Rosa.
The men were turned over to U.S. Customs and Border Protection for processing.
