10-year-old arrested for violent soccer foul

(CBS) - A 10-year-old youth soccer player has been arrested in Hong Kong after a violent foul against an opposing player. The young boy can be seen in this video kicking the 12-year-old from the other team in the head. The video emerged last week, quickly circulating around the web and apparently leading to quick action from Hong Kong police.

The unnamed 10-year-old is a member of the English Schools Foundation, an educational network primarily for children of expatriates. The victim, a native Chinese child, plays for Kitchee Escola. While the victim's injuries were not serious, his parents filed charges against the ESF player.

British newspaper The Telegraph reports that the assailant was released on bail on Monday.

"I understand that the parent of the injured child has referred the matter to the police and we will cooperate fully with any police investigation," the head of the Hong Kong ESF, Heather Du Quesnay, wrote in a letter to parents.

When the video first emerged, some observers were quick to point out a racial angle: the Caucasian ESF player kicking a Chinese child on the ground. Other commenters point out the emotionally charged "grudge match" quality of the game. Kitchee Escola defeated ESF earlier in the year 16-0.

The head of the Kitchee sports club, Ken Ng, downplayed the racial component of the incident.

"Don't read too much into it," Ng told AFP. "It is one boy kicking another boy."
