Dog Survives Brutal Attack In Kendall Neighborhood

KENDALL (CBS4) -- A brutal dog attack in Kendall is raising concerns in that neighborhood. The dog was walking near its house when someone mutilated it and the owner wants to warn others so it doesn't happen again.

Omar Rodriguez doesn't understand why anyone would want to hurt his dog "Blackie." The 8-year-old mutt isn't well-trained but he's very sweet and cuddly. The poor pooch was beat up and cut up, right in his own Kendall neighborhood on Monday, Feb. 7th.

Omar says Blackie slipped through an open door and ran out of the house. He returned five minutes later with stab wounds all over his body and his tail partially cut off. There was even a trail of blood on the fence where Blackie tried to get back into his house.

Omar's 4-year-old niece opened the door, saw the injured dog and started crying. She called out to the dog because she saw he was half dead on the floor.

Omar rushed the dog to his veterinarian who confirmed that someone took a knife or machete to the animal. The vet performed surgery on Blackie, stitched up the wounds and amputated the rest of his tail.

"I don't know what type of person would be sick enough to do this to an animal," Omar told CBS4's Evan Bacon. "This is a really good neighborhood. That's why everyone was surprised to hear about this."

Blackie will be just fine once he's all healed up, but Omar is furious that one of his neighbors would do such a thing to a harmless pet.

He had to borrow $2,000 from a friend to cover the vet bill and he filed a police report to document the abuse.

Omar said he would understand if someone was scared of the dog or tried to shoo him away but the multiple stab wounds are just un-called for.
