Wilmington Community 'In Shock' After Man Is Gunned Down Following Baby Shower

WILMINGTON (CBSLA) — A 31-year-old man was gunned down following a baby shower in the Wilmington area.

The shooting unfolded just after 2 a.m. Sunday on Young Street and Blinn Avenue.

It was there that the victim was gunned down a couple doors away from his own home, on his neighbor's lawn. Julio Urbina was just walking home from the shower, around the corner.

Police suspect that a car drove up and opened fire. A motive for the shooting remains unknown.

"As for the victim, neighbors and those who know him describe him as a loving father, a member of the community, and a hard worker," said CBS2/KCAL9 reporter Joy Benedict. "Certainly just a shock to so many in this community who say they didn't expect this to happen in their neighborhood."

Prior to the shooting, Urbina had attended a baby shower and was heading home after the festivities and hanging out with friends.

Benedict spoke to friends and neighbors who said Urbina worked in construction (a proud member of Laborers Local 1309), was a married father of two young boys and that he and his wife were expecting their third child -- a girl -- in a couple of weeks.

Candles line the street where Urbina lived -- and died.

"He was a good man," said neighbor and friend Victor Hernandez, "he was a worker, he had a good job. He provided for the family."
