WeHo's Ban On Sale Of Fur Apparel Goes Into Effect

WEST HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — A ban on the sale of fur apparel within the city of West Hollywood went into effect on Saturday.

The city said on its website that the ordinance, among the first of its kind in the nation, makes it unlawful for retail stores within city limits to sell, trade, or otherwise distribute clothing made from the skins or pelts of any animal with hair, fur or wool.

The ban also applies to online sales shipped from West Hollywood.

The ordinance was first approved by West Hollywood's City Council in November of 2011.

Second-hand shops, like pawn shops, are exempt, however.

Violators will be subject to civil penalties.

A first-time offender will be fined $200, along with administrative fees. Those with more than three violations within a twelve-month period may face an infraction or misdemeanor.

Meantime, activists planned to mark the day with an afternoon rally and vegan pizza party at the southeast corner of San Vicente and Santa Monica boulevards.
