COVINA (CBSLA) - An assault suspect took police on a chase from Azusa to Covina before stopping and refusing to exit the full-size GMC pickup truck near the intersections of Hollenbeck Avenue and Cypress. The standoff lasted for more than two hours.
At around 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sheriff's Deputies were sent to an Azusa home regarding a domestic disturbance call. The suspect, a male, reportedly assaulted a family member with a deadly weapon. When officers arrived, the man drove away in the pickup truck.
The pursuit ended in Covina after a spike strip flattened both of the front tires of the suspect's vehicle.
After several hours, police surrounded the suspect's truck with three armored vehicles. The man exited the vehicle and officers him took him down without firing any weapons.
"I just didn't want anything bad to happen to the gentlemen. Obviously, he's going through some issues. I was just glad to see that either they got him out or he surrendered. I couldn't really tell, but either way I'm glad it all ended the way it ended, peacefully and he was not hurt in any way. So, it all ended well," Denise Vasquez, a Covina resident told CBSLA's Jeff Nguyen.
The sheriff's department has not yet released the suspect's name.
