CAUGHT ON VIDEO: Victorville Suspect Shot, Wounded After Wrestling Away Gun From San Bernardino Deputy, Opening Fire

VICTORVILLE (CBSLA) – San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputies shot and wounded a suspect in a Victorville neighborhood Wednesday morning after dramatic cell phone footage captured the moment the suspect seized a deputy's handgun away from her during a scuffle and then opened fire with it as she ran for cover.

The deputy, identified as Meagan Forsberg, was not wounded by the suspect's gunfire, but she was taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries she sustained during the struggle, the sheriff's department said.

The suspect, 21-year-old Ari Young, is expected to survive his gunshot wounds.

The incident began at around 8:25 a.m., when deputies responded to a 911 call from a mother who said she needed her son removed from her home in the 13100 block of Cabazon Court.

Forsberg was the first to arrive on scene, the sheriff's department said, where she made contact with Young.

The sheriff's department reports that Forsberg became combative, punching and kicking her in the head and face.

Cell phone video shot by a neighbor and obtained by CBS2 showed Young wrestling Forsberg to the sidewalk and then taking her handgun from her. Video then showed him firing at least one shot in her direction before two more sheriff's patrol cruisers come screeching in to her rescue.

One of the arriving deputies is heard yelling at Young to "drop the gun," before several more shots are fired. The sheriff's department reports that deputies opened fire on Young when he ignored commands to drop the gun.

News footage showed Young being placed into an ambulance. He was then airlifted to a local hospital, sheriff's spokesperson Mara Rodriguez Rodriguez said.

Forsberg was not struck by Young's gunfire, and no other deputies were hurt, officials said. She was, however taken to a hospital for injuries sustained during the assault. Her injuries were not considered serious.
