UC Riverside Opens New School Of Medicine Monday

RIVERSIDE (AP) — The University of California, Riverside is opening its new school of medicine to a class of 50 students.

The Press-Enterprise reports that orientation begins Monday, after more than three decades of the school having a piecemeal program.

The four-year medical program used to begin at UC Riverside, only to have students head to UCLA for their last two years of classes.

The process of planning for a wholly UC Riverside based program began in 2003, was approved by the UC Regents three years later and final plans were submitted in 2008.

California's struggling economy slowed the school's path to opening, but after a $100 million fundraising effort, the school will operate at a reduced capacity.

Of 2,400 applicants only 83 were accepted, and 50 chose to attend UC Riverside.
