UC President Mark Yudof announced Thursday the tobacco ban will be in effect in 2014.

The newly approved policy prohibits cigarettes, chewing tobacco, tobacco sales, and tobacco advertisements anywhere on any UC system campus.

Many UCLA students expressed support for the ban.

"I don't think other people's decisions to smoke should be able to affect everybody else," said one student. "I can walk down and somebody's smoking, that sucks for me."

Other students said the ban would minimize litter on campus from discarded cigarettes.

Eight percent of UC students and 10 percent of employees are reportedly smokers.
