Traffic Isn't The Only Headache For L.A. Drivers

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — It's not just the seemingly endless rush hour that makes driving in Los Angeles a nightmare.

Bad roads around the city are costing drivers a bundle in repairs and time getting around problems.

Rafael Lozano says he's already had to replace two tires on his brand new luxury car because of bad roads.

"My rims get dented up, sometimes when I hit certain dips," Lozano said.

Onik Minassian, who owns an auto shop owner in Burbank, says he often gets customers who've destroyed tires and rims on the 5 Freeway.

A new study has quantified the wear and tear on L.A. area drivers. The transportation research group TRIP, found that drivers lose about $3,000 a year because of deteriorated and unsafe roads, and time spent in traffic.

CBSLA drove around the San Fernando valley examining freeways and roads and found lots of bumps and dips and talked to drivers.

"We need to fix the roads, we're such a car driven town here," Lisa Johnson said.

As Lozano worries about keeping his new car safe, he says funding is the answer.

"I think more money needs to be put into the roads because it's not just bad for the drivers and costing us money, it's safety issues you know," Lozano said.
