Theaters Around Southland Playing 'Purple Rain' As Homage To Prince
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Several movie theaters around the southland have announced plans to show "Purple Rain" as an homage to Prince.
The legendary rocker died Thursday at 57.
"Purple Rain," released in 1984, was the semi-autobiographical story of Prince's rise to fame.
Prince starred in the movie along with Morris Day, Apollonia and Clarence Williams III. While "Purple Rain" was never well-received by critics, audiences liked the musical sequences that amounted to a high-tech and well-choreographed battle of the bands.
The film also introduced two of Prince's best and most-popular songs, "When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy."
"When Doves Cry" was top-selling song of 1984 and was number one for five weeks. "When Doves Cry" was also ranked number 52 on Rolling Stone's list of 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time in 2004.
"Let's Go Crazy" also went to No. 1.

In addition, Studio Movie Grill theaters across the country will show the film next Tuesday and Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased online. (There is a SMG in Simi Valley, 1555 Simi Town Center Way, Unit B-100,)
On Friday, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art paid tribute to Prince by turning its Rain Room purple.
