Survey: Caltech, UCLA Among Top 10 Global University Brands

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Four California universities are among the top 10 most powerful global university brands in the world, according to the world's top scholars surveyed by the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings.

Stanford University ranked highest at No. 3, after Harvard and MIT. UC Berkeley was ranked No. 6, and Caltech and UCLA rounded out the top 10, according to the rankings, which were compiled from what the British magazine calls the "world's largest invitation-only academic opinion survey."

According to the survey, Stanford received an overall score of 74.9, while Berkeley was scored at 63.1. Caltech received a 29.2 and UCLA was scored at 28.8.

The ranking methodology says the scores are based on the number of times an institution is cited as being the best in their field. Harvard, which was selected most often, set the bar for subsequent scores.

The 2014 rankings are based on a survey carried out between March and May 2013, which received 10,536 responses from 133 countries. Respondents targeted are experienced, published scholars in fields like social sciences, engineering, technology and physical sciences with an average career of 18 years in the academy.

Geographically, 25 percent of the responses came from scholars in North America, 19 percent from Western Europe and 13 percent from East Asia. Scholars from Oceania, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and South America were also included.
