Students Evacuated After Chemical Scare At East Valley High School

NORTH HOLLYWOOD (CBS) — Students at a San Fernando Valley high school were evacuated Monday after a reported chemical scare.

Teachers and other officials at East Valley High School at 5525 Vineland Avenue in North Hollywood were seen leading students out of classrooms while hazardous materials crews investigated "a science experiment that had apparently gone awry", according to Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

"There was no fire or explosion, but they as well as the rest of the student body calmly evacuated to the football field," said Humphrey.

Fifteen students and one teacher who were in a chemistry lab were being evaluated for vague complaints, with at least one person transported to an area hospital for additional medical treatment.

KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO reported the science experiment reportedly involved nitric acid and sugar.

Students and faculty were being moved from the field into the gymnasium shortly after 2:00 p.m. on Monday.
