At every hour throughout the night there was a Recitation of the Rosary and other prayers for the conclave, which began at 8:45 a.m. PT Tuesday at the Vatican.

The number of worshipers grew to 300 overnight as followers prayed for the swift election of a new pope.

"I think we should leave it to the Holy Spirit and He will guide us and He will know what we need," one woman told CBS2.

"Whoever he is, he's gonna inherit a church that's in trouble,""another man said.

The vigil concluded at 7 a.m. Tuesday with a Votive Mass for the Election of a Pope. A noon mass also offered prayers for the new pope.
