Southern California to experience "hottest week of summer so far," National Weather Service says

Southern California is set to experience its hottest week of the summer thus far as record-setting temperatures are expected across the region, according to the National Weather Service.

A NWS bulletin says widespread high temperatures will be between 6 and 12 degrees warmer than average for the week, prompting excessive heat warnings.

"This will be the hottest week of the summer so far," the bulletin reads. "In addition, overnight temperatures will be warming as well and many areas are set to break record high minimum temperatures this week."

CBS LA has issued a Next Weather Alert across the region through Tuesday due to extreme heat. A Next Weather Watch is in place through Friday, which could be elevated to an alert if suitable.

In the Los Angeles area, temperatures throughout the next several days could stick in the mid to high 90s, according to CBS LA meteorologists. Inland communities could reach between 107 and 112 by midweek.

Monday's high temperatures are expected to be about 1 or 2 degrees cooler than Sunday in most communities, but they're set to jump back up on Tuesday.

Triple digits were forecast in the Inland Empire for Tuesday, with inland parts of Orange County threatening to cross the 100-degree threshold.

The NWS warned residents to remain cautious when outdoors or without air conditioning throughout the week.

"Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors," the agency said.
