Southern California braces for triple-digit temperatures as heat wave strengthens
Triple-digit temperatures are expected across Southern California on Monday as a prolonged heat wave continues with several days of extreme heat ahead.
According to the National Weather Service, the impact will carry heat illness risks for most people and increased fire danger across the remainder of the week. Temperatures as high as 15 degrees above average are expected.
As a result of the extreme heat, CBS LA has issued a Next Weather Alert for all of Southern California through Tuesday, with a Next Weather Watch in place through Saturday.
"The question would be, how long is this going to last," said CBS LA meteorologist Paul Deanno. "Because it was hot over the weekend, it's still hot today, it's going to be hotter tomorrow and even hotter perhaps on Wednesday."
Monday is expected to be one of the hottest days of the year so far, yet may be one of the coolest days of the week. Monday's high temperatures include:
- 97 degrees in downtown Los Angeles
- 104 in Lancaster
- 104 in Ojai
- 99 in Pasadena
- 94 in Santa Barbara
- 105 in Santa Clarita
- 105 in Simi Valley
- 96 in Anaheim
- 90 in Irvine
- 105 in Lake Elsinore
- 102 in Riverside
- 101 in Ontario
- 104 in San Bernardino
- 98 in Temecula
- 80 in San Clemente
On Tuesday, those highs are expected to jump another couple of degrees in most spots, and again on Wednesday.
The NWS warned residents to remain cautious when outdoors or without air conditioning throughout the week.
"Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors," the agency said.
