HEMET ( — Authorities Friday announced an arrest in connection with the shooting deaths of an elderly couple at a Hemet mobile home park Thursday.

A news release issued by the City of Hemet Police Department said police arrested the couple's son, 42-year-old David Michael Underwood, who was initially detained as a "person of interest."

Chief Dave Brown announced the arrest at a town hall meeting Friday where the crimes occurred.

The murdered couple was identified as 71-year-old Michael Underwood and his 68-year-old wife Laura.

Police detained Underwood in Anaheim Thursday after nine hours of investigating and corroborating with other agencies.

The Yorba Linda resident was subsequently booked in connection with the crimes. His bail has been set at $1 million.

"We are confident that the individual responsible for this senseless crime is in our custody. I'm very proud of the teamwork that led to the swift apprehension," Chief Brown said.

A motive for the crimes was not immediately known, police said.
