RIVERSIDE (CBSLA) – Seven people were wounded when shots rang out at a packed Riverside nightclub overnight Sunday which authorities are calling an attempted murder.
At 12:04 a.m. Monday, Riverside police responded to reports of shots fired both inside and outside of the Sevilla Nightclub, located in the 3200 block of Mission Inn Avenue.
Officers arrived on scene and found two people with gunshot wounds. Another five gunshot victims later checked themselves in to various area hospitals, police said.
None of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening, police said.
Two other people at the club suffered minor injuries from the stampede that ensued following the shooting, but they were not hospitalized, the fire department said.
At the time of the shooting, the club was holding a special event called "The Purge: Election Year."
"People started falling to the ground, and I thought people were fighting or dancing at first," one man told reporters. "And I turn around, and then people started shooting and then I ran behind the bar... I heard automatic gunshots, there was like ten in a row."
"We got trampled, I have bruises all over my back, it was just really traumatic, honestly," another man added.
It is still unclear how many gunmen opened fire, what the motive was or who was targeted. Police do not believe the shooting was random in nature. No arrests have been made.
