According to Santa Ana police, Mendoza was behind the wheel of a Honda Civic hatchback when he lost control and crashed around 1:15 a.m.
The vehicle was "traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on the 900 block North Fairview Street when the driver lost control and collided with a fence and then into a utility pole," officials said.
A 23-year-old male passenger from Santa Ana died at the scene. Mendoza's other passengers — one male and two females — were transported to local trauma centers for injuries that ranged from critical to minor, according to police.
