San Bernardino High School Football Game Ends In Bench-Clearing Brawl

SAN BERNARDINO ( — A high school football game in San Bernardino ended in a bench-clearing brawl between players last Friday night.

The melee, which was caught on camera, happened during a Homecoming game at San Bernardino High School with Palm Desert High.

Palm Desert was leading 45-6 when San Bernardino's quarterback was tackled in front of Palm Desert's bench.

A San Bernardino player proceeded to knock a Palm Desert player from behind, drawing a penalty flag.

Then, players on both teams got physical.

Jeff Imbriani, San Bernardino's coach, said that's not the entire story.

"All we know is that he got tackled. He got grabbed in the private. He got up, kinda shoved the guy off…like…'What are you doing?' And then he swung. The guy swung and then (it was) all melee from there," he said.

CIF Southern Section rules state that a football player who leaves the bench during an altercation is disqualified from playing the next game.

Palm Desert and San Bernardino high schools could forfeit their scheduled games Friday because members of each team participated in the fight.

CIF officials have allowed both schools to make recommendations for discipline.

"(On) Wednesday, the school administration from San Bernardino and Palm Desert high schools, they will be meeting to discuss the situation," said Linda Bardere from the San Bernardino Unified School District.

CIF, however, will ultimately decide whether or not the suggested punishments are good enough.
