Rumble Strips Installed To Deter Street Racing On Chatsworth's 'Canoga Speedway'

CHATSWORTH (CBSLA.com) – Rumble strips have been installed on a half-mile stretch of a popular street racing roadway in Chatsworth.

The rumble strips were completed this week by the Los Angeles Department of Transportation on the so-called "Canoga Speedway" on Plummer Street, between Canoga Avenue and Topanga Canyon Boulevard. The straight stretch is popular with street racers because it only has one stop sign.

In February 2015, two bystanders were struck and killed during a street race in the area. The driver, Karen Balyn, was later sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Los Angeles City Councilor Mitchell Englander, who proposed the project, held a news conference Wednesday with Los Angeles police officials on Plummer Street to discuss the $14,000 pilot program.

This is the first time rumble strips have been tried in L.A. to combat street racing.
