Riverside Ranks Among Most Intelligent Communities Worldwide

RIVERSIDE (CBS) — New York's Intelligent Community Forum named Riverside one of the "Seven Intelligent Communities of 2012." This is the second year in a row the city has received the honor.

"That Riverside competes, and wins, among cities across the globe illustrates our commitment to municipal innovation in technology," said Riverside Mayor Ron Loveridge.

The other six cities that received the honor were Austin, Texas; Oulu, Finland; Quebec City, Canada; Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada; Stratford, Ontario, Canada and Taichung City, Taiwan.

The 2012 awardees were announced Wednesday.

"The community has partnered with its universities to develop tech parks, incubators, business accelerators and mentoring programs," the Intelligent Community Forum said of Riverside. "Carriers have developed fiber and wireless networks reaching 80 percent of the city."

The city's signature program, SmartRiverside, provides incentives for high-tech businesses to operate in Riverside and offers city residents a variety of ways to utilize the Internet, including offering free computers to qualifying low-income families.
