Alleged DUI driver arrested for deadly Riverside County crash that killed 15-year-old

An alleged DUI driver was arrested following a crash on the 215 Freeway in Riverside over the weekend that killed a 15-year-old, according to police. 

In a news release shared by the California Highway Patrol, officers said that they were called to southbound lanes of I-215 near Cactus Avenue at around 3:35 a.m. for reports of a multi-car crash. 

"Preliminary investigation revealed a 2008 BMW X5 was traveling ... at a high rate of speed when it collided with the rear of a GMC Sierra, which was towing a trailer carrying a side-by-side all-terrain vehicle," the release said. "Upon impact, the BMW and all-terrain vehicle overturned onto the roadway."

Police said that the BMW continued out of control after overturning and wound up in the middle lane of the northbound 215 Freeway. 

Upon arrival, Riverside County Fire Department paramedics pronounced the passenger of the BMW, only identified as a 15-year-old, dead at the scene. The driver and two other passengers were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. 

Police said that the driver of the GMC was uninjured. 

"The driver of the BMW was placed under arrest for felony driving under the influence of alcohol," the release said.
