Police shot and killed an allegedly armed man after responding to a domestic violence call in Murrieta on Wednesday evening.

They arrived at the Pacific Landing Apartments, located in the 36100 block of Creighton Avenue near Clinton Keith Road, at around 11:50 p.m., according to a statement from the Murrieta Police Department.

Arriving officers knocked on the door of a unit at the apartment complex, where they heard "signs of distress," the statement said. They "made a forced entry" at which point they "encountered the male armed with a handgun."

"During that encounter, an officer-involved shooting occurred, and the male resident was struck with gunfire."

The man, who has not yet been identified, was taken to a nearby hospital where was declared dead upon arrival, police said.

The woman in the apartment, also unidentified, was not injured, nor were officers involved in the incident.

The investigation has been turned over to the Riverside County Sheriff's Office's Force Investigations Detail and the officers placed on administrative leave per department policy.
