PCH to partially reopen by summer as Palisades Fire cleanup continues
The roadblocks and closures stifling traffic on the Pacific Coast Highway may be gone by the start of summer, according to Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Restricted travel along the iconic freeway has decreased revenue for businesses in Malibu and Pacific Palisades, leading to many residents and local businesses pleading for officials to reopen the roadway. Newsom said only one lane in each direction of the coastal highway will be open by the end of May.
While there is no doubt businesses need customers, the sudden announcement has some businesses worried.
"A very mixed reaction," co-owner Carter Crary said.
Crary has a front-row view of the constant truck parade flowing through PCH as the cleanup and rebuilding process continues.
"The road right now back up pretty significantly in the morning rush and evening rush hour," he said. "I can't imagine what it's going to be like if the west side Los Angeles is trying to get along with all of the truck and everything else."
Former Malibu Mayor and now Planning Commission Chair Skylar Peak said he's looking for balance during this massive project.
"People need access to our community," he said. "Our businesses need visitors to come and support them ... I just hope that's done in the most safe manner possible."
