OC Officials Agree To Pay $4.4M To Family Of Unarmed Marine Killed By Deputy
SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — Orange County officials have agreed to pay $4.4 million to the family of an unarmed Marine fatally shot by a sheriff's deputy last year.
On Feb. 7, 2012, Sgt. Manuel Levi Loggins Jr., 31, crashed his sports utility vehicle, with his 9 and 14-year-old daughters inside, through a gate at San Clemente High School.
Deputy Darren Sandberg, who was in his patrol car doing paperwork, said he saw the collision and ordered Loggins out of the SUV.
Loggins exited, but started walking toward the school's athletic field.
Sandberg ordered Loggins to stop and shot him when he didn't comply.
Following the incident, Loggins' kids were held for questioning for 13 hours by authorities without access to family members.
As part of the lawsuit settlement, the county will set up annuities for all four of Loggins' children.
The union representing sheriff's deputies maintains that Loggins was to blame for his own death because he didn't follow orders to surrender.
