Navy Honors Family Of Late OC Marine Killed In Afghanistan
CAMP PENDLETON (CBS) — An Orange County family has received the U.S. Navy's highest honor.
Carla and Jim Hogan were presented with the Navy Cross at a Camp Pendleton ceremony on Tuesday in honor of their son, Lance Cpl. Donald Hogan, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2009.
Hogan, 20, was on foot patrol when he spotted a roadside bomb right before it detonated and pushed one fellow Marine out of harm's way.
He also screamed for others nearby to take cover from the explosion.
Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said Hogan's "actions make him one of the finest and bravest Marines in the nation's history".
The ceremony also marked the opening of a barracks facility at Camp Pendleton named in honor of Hogan.
