Manuel Beats Hareb To Win Supergirl Pro Surfing Contest
OCEANSIDE, Calif. (AP) — Malia Manuel of Wailua, Hawaii, beat Paige Hareb of New Zealand in the finals Sunday at the Oceanside Pier to win the Ford Supergirl Pro, the world's largest all-women's surf contest.
Manuel, a three-time runner-up, won $8,000 from the $40,000 purse. She had the top scores in each round while progressing to the final.
Bethany Hamilton, who lost her left arm in a shark attack in 2003, was eliminated in the round of 12.
The three-day contest, produced by ASA Entertainment, drew a field of 96. It is the only ASP 6-Star competition in North America.
