27-year-old man arrested for stabbing woman in Long Beach

A 27-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stabbing a woman in Long Beach in May, according to police.

In a news release, the Long Beach Police Department said that the incident happened on May 28 at around 10:40 p.m., when officers were called to the 4500 block of California Avenue for reports of a stabbing.

Upon arrival, they found that a woman was stabbed by an unknown man while she was walking in the area. By the time officers arrived, the suspect had already fled from the scene.

The woman was hospitalized with stab wounds to her upper and lower body. She was said to be in stable condition at the latest.

"Through their investigation, Violent Crimes detectives identified the suspect as Joseph Hernandez, a 27-year-old male resident of Long Beach," the release said.

Officers found that Hernandez was already in custody for an unrelated incident, and he was rebooked and charged with attempted murder. He remains behind bars in lieu of $1 million bail, police said.

Anyone who knows more was asked to contact LBPD Violent Crimes Detective Derek Bailey at 562-570-7250.
