Light Rail Extension Into Santa Monica Set To Open In May
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Passenger rail service will soon return to Los Angeles' Westside for the first time in more than 50 years.
Public transit officials announced Thursday that the Expo Line from Culver City will extend another 6.6 miles to Santa Monica, beginning May 20.
The extension will mark the first passenger rail service between downtown Los Angeles to the Westside since the Pacific Electric streetcar network ended in the 1950s.
It's part of a transit rebirth that will bring the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's subway and light rail network to nearly 105 miles.
The Metro Gold Line's 11.5-mile extension from Pasadena to Azusa in the eastern county is expected to open in March with six new stops.
Both projects were funded by a sales tax increase that voters passed in 2008.
