LAUSD To Appoint Interim Representative Following Death Of LaMotte, 80

LOS ANGELES ( — The Los Angeles Unified School District board agreed Tuesday to the appointment of an interim, non-voting representative to fill the vacancy left following the death of Marguerite Poindexter LaMotte.

After the board's initial rejection of the proposal, board member Bennett Kayser broke a 3-3 deadlock by changing his vote.

The interim member is expected to be appointed sometime in March, after an ad-hoc committee meeting, which will focus on the representative's duties.

The committee, which is chaired by board member Steve Zimmer, is expecting to submit a report to the board on February 11.

A special election was previously scheduled by the board for June 3 to fill LaMotte's seat, including an August 12 runoff, if necessary.

The interim member will be serving in the First District seat until the event that an elected representative is sworn in.

LaMotte passed away while attending an education conference in San Diego. She was 80 years old.

The district announced Tuesday that a public memorial service for LaMotte is scheduled for Saturday.

The service will take plate at Washington Preparatory High School, 10860 S. Denker Ave., at 9:30 a.m.

Parking will be available at nearby Los Angeles Southwest College, 1600 W. Imperial Highway, and shuttles will be running to-and-from the service, free of charge, according to district officials.
