LA Libraries Offering Free Music Downloads For Cardholders

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Next time you're at the library, you won't have to read in silence — if you even get around to a book at all.

That's because libraries across Los Angeles County and the city of Los Angeles are now offering free music downloads to cardholders through a service known as Freegal — which stands for "free and legal".

KNX 1070's Claudia Peschiutta reports the service allows all users with a library card to download up to three free selections from the Sony website.

"The goal is really to meet this incredible demand that we've been experiencing for e-media at the library," said Peter Pursek with the Los Angeles Public Library.

Traditionally, the music selection available to library patrons has been limited to classical or music in the public domain.

But now, Pursek insists that's all about to change.

"This is really revolutionary, because it's actually providing access to a major, major popular music catalog," he said.

Songs can be downloaded via any of the websites in the L.A. County library system.
