LA City Council Makes Plea For NFL Team
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The Los Angeles City Council went on record Wednesday asking the NFL to locate a team in the city.
Councilman Tom LaBonge led the way, revealing he has written letters and made phone calls to executives at the professional sports league.
"All I did was say, 'Hey, we want football here again.' Because it's been a long time," LaBonge said.
The councilman argued that the city's population of nearly four million - the second-largest nationwide behind New York - warrants the consideration of at least one, and possibly even two, pro teams.
"My son now is 15 - never seen a pro game in L.A. I had to take him to San Diego or Oakland to see a game. I think that it is important that we open the door up again for football here at someplace," LaBonge said.
L.A. has a deal in place with Anschutz Entertainment Group to build the downtown NFL stadium and expand the Convention Center if the city gets a team.
If there is no team, the deal is scheduled to expire by this time next year.
