For nearly 100 years, locals have come together to celebrate Halloween and fall in general in Anaheim. Local artists, performers, schools, business and organizations are represented in the twilight parade. The fall festival, on the other hand, was originally developed to celebrate the harvest season, but has since included aspects of Halloween and Dia de los Muertos as well. With costume contests (including one for pets!), live music, games, a pumpkin patch and local artisans selling their crafts, this free festival is the perfect way to spend the day before watching the annual parade.

Another independent Halloween attraction, The 17th Door opened up just last year during this time, already making a name for itself as one of the scariest haunts in Orange County. The attraction takes visitors through a whirlwind story, requiring that they face a variety of psychological fears to reach the end of the over 30-minute maze. As the name implies, there are 17 rooms to pass through to complete the attraction with the intensity and terror increasing as you go. The haunted house is so scary that it requires a signed waiver. The monsters are allowed to touch you, unlike most attractions of its kind. It also offers a way out - say the word "mercy" and you'll skip to the end, avoiding the rest of the terror inside the 17th Door. For those who love to be scared, the 17th Door is the place to be this Halloween season.
